lyrics

There’s this waitress down in Cambridge and her hair is going gray
She’s overworked, she’s underpaid, she can’t afford a break
The voices on the news review the horrors of the day
But the waitress stays complacent waiting for something to change

But some things just never change

The latest controversy has been bugging her all day
Allegations raised against a certain candidate
And to make matters worse, her manager thinks the matter’s up for debate
And the waitress’ patience bends then suddenly it breaks

She takes a few deep breaths
and a break for a cigarette

Then the manager hassles her outside
Tryna prove why his perspective right
Antagonized, the waitress decides she’s waited long enough

Then she flicked her cigarette in his face
Then said "fuck you and fuck this place"
And then she walked away saying

Some things just never change

A couple blocks away a young man makes his way back home
He bumps into a plainclothes cop while looking at his phone
He reflexively requested an apology
So the cop assumed his hatred-fueled authority
He grabs him by the collar and backs into a vestibule
As people pass the suspect laughs, “I hope this makes the news”
Then the waitress rounds the corner, Massachusetts Avenue,
Where the spirit of America would soon come into view

She says let’s settle down, just let him go
Started to film but she got just a little close
And then the plainclothes cop says “stop or I’ll arrest you too”

The waitress snapped, sirens ensued, street subdivided red and blue
Both ends burning down her fuse, onlookers stopped and a crowd grew
“Under arrest?” “What did he do?” Only the waitress knew
But she’d expose the truth when she sent her video to the news

15 minute fame of disgrace
To put this injustice in its place
Won’t let you get away with this
Case dismissed

Nothing will ever change without you

Nothing will ever change
If we all withdraw and wait
Nothing will ever change
